When is it necessary to dim your high beams?

Dimming your high beams is necessary when approaching oncoming traffic because high beams can be blinding to other drivers. They are designed to illuminate the road over long distances but can produce excessive glare when directed towards another vehicle's windshield. This glare can hinder the vision of the oncoming driver, increasing the risk of a collision. By dimming your high beams, you allow the oncoming driver to see the road clearly, promoting safety for both parties.

In contrast, high beams can be used in well-lit areas since streetlights provide sufficient illumination for visibility. When no other vehicles are present, it is also acceptable to use high beams because they won’t cause any distraction or vision impairment to other drivers. Finally, during daylight, high beams can still be used as long as they do not interfere with other vehicles; however, it is typically more common to use low beams in daylight to avoid unnecessary glare.
